A Conan Doyle

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
(1859-1930)

  • Sherlock Holmes created in 1887 in “A Study in Scarlet.” Featured in over 50 stories.
  • Partially modeled after Doyle’s university professor Joseph Bell.
  • Also suggested that Holmes is partially modeled after Poe’s detective
character C. Auguste Dupin — main character in “The Murders in the Rue
Morgue” and “The Purloined Letter.”
  • “The Speckled Band”  was first published in Strand Magazine in February
1892.  Doyle considered it his best Sherlock Holmes story.
